Elvis-Daniel Velea - 2023-11-28 13:23:18
any kahoot today?
Geoff Huston - 2023-11-28 13:58:27
Elvis - I am online
Elvis-Daniel Velea - 2023-11-28 13:58:59
cool, looking forward to the presentation
Elvis-Daniel Velea - 2023-11-28 13:59:24
regarding the lasers - they already use them to connect antarctica
Geoff Huston - 2023-11-28 13:59:25
send me a PM or use signal
Geoff Huston - 2023-11-28 14:00:32
They are using inter-spacecfaft lasers in a number of scenarios - the in the pacific (Tuvalu for example), in Western Mongolia and most of the uninhabited bits of Australia
Jeremy Walder - 2023-11-28 14:01:13

Elvis-Daniel Velea - 2023-11-28 14:01:15
we’ll see how they’ll eventually develop in the future, I am also curious if the lasers will help them actually gain some ms over long distance and be faster than fiber
Geoff Huston - 2023-11-28 14:01:16
it adds about 20 - 30ms to the RTT, but otherwise appears to be similar to direct up/down connections
Geoff Huston - 2023-11-28 14:02:53
The problem here is that burn up a lot of time in packing the signal with FEC, so what they gain in speed over fibre they loose out with the encode/decode time
Eric Vyncke - 2023-11-28 14:03:02
What is the source of this added delay as opposed to radio wave?
Elvis-Daniel Velea - 2023-11-28 14:03:12
I’ve been using it at home since Feb 2021, have noticed improvements and changes over the past couple of years.. I actually have a probe at my home, on Starlink, which can help with measurements :(
Eric Vyncke - 2023-11-28 14:03:16
LoL, you replied *before* my question
Elvis-Daniel Velea - 2023-11-28 14:03:44
(oups to the wrong emoticon :)
Geoff Huston - 2023-11-28 14:03:50
do you remember analogue modems using 5 SECONDS foe encode/decode (yes, it was a long time ago). There is a similar issue here
Karla Wagner - 2023-11-28 14:04:22
Good Afternoon, from the Amsterdam Hub at Technologia Incognita.
Geoff Huston - 2023-11-28 14:04:54
I use remote attached NUCs to analyse the Starlink service
Jeremy Walder - 2023-11-28 14:04:59
good afternoon Karla
Eric Vyncke - 2023-11-28 14:18:56
LEO ;-)
Jan Zorz - 2023-11-28 14:19:35
:)
Brian Storey - 2023-11-28 14:26:55
seeing the train go through the sky at night is really something amazing.
Tim Chown - 2023-11-28 14:28:47
so my cat can go up for 50-150k $
Geoff Huston - 2023-11-28 14:29:08
yup - it's a bargain!
Geoff Huston - 2023-11-28 14:29:31
(not so much for the poor cat I guess!)
Elvis-Daniel Velea - 2023-11-28 14:29:54
Starship will get that price down by 10x
Jeremy Walder - 2023-11-28 14:29:55
🙀
Taras Heichenko - 2023-11-28 14:30:46
Maybe your cat pays you more to not be sent there?
Jeremy Walder - 2023-11-28 14:32:50
I don't think my cats would really appreciate it!
Geoff Huston - 2023-11-28 14:37:52
4000 micro-drops per DAY, not per hour - ooops got it wrong!
Tim Chown - 2023-11-28 14:38:18
the starlink test on the 2023 data mover challenge also showed the interesting effect of cloudy weather.
Tim Chown - 2023-11-28 14:38:49
and the transfer tools that did best were the adaptive ones.
Geoff Huston - 2023-11-28 14:38:58
yes, the UK has a tougher time as compared to California (where these measurements were taken)
Elvis-Daniel Velea - 2023-11-28 14:39:29
yeah, I have between 20 and 50 micro drops every day, about 1s each
Tim Chown - 2023-11-28 14:39:37
the dmc tests were over R&E networks around the world to/fro one starlink terminal, not sure where though.
Elvis-Daniel Velea - 2023-11-28 14:42:36
wondering if you have tested the various hardware and subscription packets or was this just the standard?
Elvis-Daniel Velea - 2023-11-28 14:42:57
also, have you done any tests with the dish on the move?
Geoff Huston - 2023-11-28 14:43:19
Starlink Dishy, Starlink modem, INtel NUC connected to probe and measure
Elvis-Daniel Velea - 2023-11-28 14:43:46
there are 2-3 types of dishes now
Geoff Huston - 2023-11-28 14:44:08
earth movement foes not matter much - from the spacecraft's perspective most things on the ground don't move very fast!!!
Eric Vyncke - 2023-11-28 14:44:10
Just curios why from California rather than Australia ? To get a 'near' ground station/relay ?
Geoff Huston - 2023-11-28 14:44:40
I have a willing and capable collaborator (my son!)
Eric Vyncke - 2023-11-28 14:44:47
;-)
Elvis-Daniel Velea - 2023-11-28 14:45:09
if you need more vantage points, I can give you access to one in NV too :)
Petra Zeidler - 2023-11-28 14:45:23
I offer antarctic peninsula
Elvis-Daniel Velea - 2023-11-28 14:45:45
you win!
Geoff Huston - 2023-11-28 14:46:02
Elvis - I'll PM you
Elvis-Daniel Velea - 2023-11-28 14:46:21
ok
Geoff Huston - 2023-11-28 14:46:22
Petra - whats the latitude of this location?
Niall O'Reilly - 2023-11-28 14:47:56
👏
Petra Zeidler - 2023-11-28 14:49:14
it's roughly 63° 19′ 16″ S, 57° 53′ 55″ W
Shane Kerr - 2023-11-28 14:50:32
"roughly" 😆
Tim Chown - 2023-11-28 14:52:43
you can get 30-40G single stream with cubic, depends on the network.
Eric Vyncke - 2023-11-28 14:53:58
1" being about 30m... (as 1' is one nautical mile), no really "rough estimate" indeed
Tim Chown - 2023-11-28 14:54:08
the cern experiment infrastructure is testing bbr for its long fat pipes, along with other pacing, jumbo frames, etc., but classic tcp is ok in R&E networks.
Bengt Gördén - 2023-11-28 14:59:11
Applause
Shane Kerr - 2023-11-28 15:03:06
Sweden seems to care way more about clocks than the rest of the world put togethre. 😉
Niall O'Reilly - 2023-11-28 15:05:53
@Shane, and with a long history. I recall Peter Löthberg's prezo at RIPE50.
Jan Zorz - 2023-11-28 15:06:08
I would think Switzerland would be the one, but no.... :)
Eric Vyncke - 2023-11-28 15:06:47
@Jan: NTP/roughtime is free hence lack of interest ?
Eric Vyncke - 2023-11-28 15:07:10
;-)
Jan Zorz - 2023-11-28 15:07:55
probably... :)
Oksana Prykhodko - 2023-11-28 15:11:35
I have sent my comments and question, please read it!
Oksana Prykhodko - 2023-11-28 15:13:03
Thank you very much!
Oksana Prykhodko - 2023-11-28 15:13:52
So, the history from 2014?
Jan Zorz - 2023-11-28 15:16:52
Luise, you are on!
Louise van der Peet - 2023-11-28 15:17:22
hallo I am connected
Louise van der Peet - 2023-11-28 15:17:30
and I have uploaded a video this morning
Jan Zorz - 2023-11-28 15:18:12
video crew doesn't have the video, unfortunately
Jan Zorz - 2023-11-28 15:19:39
we are very sory for the confusion.
Eric Vyncke - 2023-11-28 15:23:14

Jan Zorz - 2023-11-28 15:30:33
Robert's question was seen too late, so I'm posting it here for Louisa to respond
Jan Zorz - 2023-11-28 15:30:35
Does a tool like this depend upon assumptions about the UI/UX used to develop evidence of "consent"? For example, are banners always required?
Bill Woodcock - 2023-11-28 15:31:10
I have not yet received the email with NRO NC voting instructions... Have others already?
Jeremy Walder - 2023-11-28 15:31:15
*This session has now ended. The next session is MAT and it will start at 16.00. More info on the RIPE 86 meeting plan: /programme/meeting-plan/
Jeremy Walder - 2023-11-28 15:31:39
Yes, have you checked in?
Bill Woodcock - 2023-11-28 15:31:54
Yes.
Bill Woodcock - 2023-11-28 15:32:17
Re-checking my spam folder...
Jeremy Walder - 2023-11-28 15:33:22
can you contact nominations [at] ripe [dot] net if you dont' find it?
Bill Woodcock - 2023-11-28 15:35:46
Thanks. Emailed.
Elvis-Daniel Velea - 2023-11-28 15:37:02
I have not received an e-mail either
Elvis-Daniel Velea - 2023-11-28 15:37:25
but the link says the voting starts at 5PM, guess there’s still time
Niall O'Reilly - 2023-11-28 15:56:09
I've been told that email with NRO NC voting instructions is due to be sent out at 17:00 UTC+1. There's no cause for concern yet.
