Yeah that's a really good point. The issue of geoblocking is one that we try to control for, by making use of fingerprints for known server-side blocking patterns. However sometimes, when the technique used is not so clear, for example the server-side blocks implemented by google for Iranian users, it's more tricky to perform attribution there.

We haven't so far done an extensive study of this phenomenon ourselves directly, though have done it ad-hoc as part of some of our research.

An a bit older paper that looks into this based on OONI data is this one: https://www.icir.org/vern/papers/tor-differential.NDSS16.pdf.

👍

@Arturo, I quite understand that it's tricky, but generally the question is pretty big - WHERE the blocking takes place? Thanks for your attempts!

Wondering why the experimental codes/types (253-254) were not used in the middle box tests

Eric Vyncke - 2023-11-28 16:58:06
@Alexander has a point ;-)

Qasim Lone - 2023-11-28 16:59:39
@Eric can you post question in Q/A

Stephen Strowes - 2023-11-28 17:01:20
@eric, I have relayed to Valentin

Valentin Heinrich - 2023-11-28 17:11:49
The experimental types are reserved for experiments (in my understanding), we could not deploy reverse traceroute with these into the wild. So we only considered types that are relevant for final deployment.

Eric Vyncke - 2023-11-28 17:14:56
@Valentin, let's try to speak this week because squatting on type/code is not better ;-)

Valentin Heinrich - 2023-11-28 17:18:07
@Eric A meeting would work, you should have my contact info 👍
